Ceramics Invitational: Plates and Platters

The plate, of course, is the most familiar form for serving food. Just going home and eating on the family china can bring back childhood memories of family dinners and holiday celebrations. We all have memories of eating on the “good china” or sitting at the kids’ table eating on the more durable and less precious dinner plates. I still have “my” plate – the one that I ate on as a child and I have kept my children’s first plates as well.

Contemporary ceramic artists offer an alternative vision of traditional dinner ware.

The twelve artists in Ceramics Invitational: Plates and Platters have taken this common form and interpreted it with their own personal and creative expression. The exhibition presents not only twelve different interpretations and inspirations, but also showcases different forming, glazing and firing techniques.

Some of the plates and platters in this show favor display over function. Some function in a traditional way, but with a contemporary twist. Some are simply elegant and beautiful to look at, others make a personal statement. As a potter friend of mine often says, “Some pots need only hold your attention.”

I hope the pieces in this exhibition will delight your eye, evoke some memories, spark your imagination and, of course, hold your attention.
